Monmouthshire Golf Club
Sited in full view of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and the other scenic delights such of the Abergavenny area, Monmouthshire Golf Club occupies a stretch of prime country alongside the River Usk that has a rich history.
The course once housed a Bronze Age settlement and the clubhouse is on the site of a semi-fortified medieval manor house that was one of the principal houses in Monmouthshire.
The oldest club in the country - it was originally called Abergavenny before it took the country name - Monmouthshire was founded as a nine-holer in 1892 on what by then had become a leading racecourse. As the racing faded out so the golfers expanded their course and the ubiquitous James Braid was drafted in to design the layout.
Home course of Iestyn Tucker, one of the finest amateur golfers Wales has ever produced, Monmouthshire can be as tough as it is beautiful and is characterised by three consecutive par-fives at the sixth, seventh and eighth. The sixth has the hardest tee-shot as a good position will be gained only by driving across a bend in the river which hugs the left of the hole and draws in any stray shot.
