Sergeants Restaurant with Rooms is located in Caerphilly County Borough, which is rich in heritage, history and beautiful countryside. The Borough is located in the heart of Southern Wales within easy reach of Cardiff and the Brecon Beacons.

History Of Sergeants

Sergeants Restaurant is situated in the former Police Station of the village of Nelson, 18 miles north of Cardiff.

The building is swathed in history. In September 1910, a Llandaff builder named Mr. S. Shail put forward a tender to build the police station for the princely sum of £1895. The building was completed and ready for occupation by June 1911 and Sergeant Walter Kelland, Nelson's first sergeant moved in with his family.

By 1988, the police station had fallen into disrepair, and was sold to a private owner, who wanted to demolish the building to build new houses, but was refused planning permission to do so. It was bought by the present owners in 1989, by which time the building was seriously in need of complete renovation.

Station House' (formerly the sergeant's house) was renovated in 1990. The police station was used as a book distribution warehouse until 1996. The new owners however, felt that the Nelson area was in desperate need of a good restaurant, so they set about the mammoth task of converting what was the Charge Room, Day Room, Boot Room & Cleaning Room into an elegant restaurant, retaining many of the original features, including a cell which is currently used for storage - and for frightening young visitors!

In September 1998, Sergeants Restaurant opened its imposing oak doors to the public. Since that time, customers have been thrilled with the menu, the quality of the food and wine, and also with the elegant comfortable ambience.

To help create the atmosphere, staff wear ex-policemen's uniforms, complete with epaulettes. For the first time in the history of the building, people actually want to spend time inside the walls of this former 'cop shop'.
